Buddhist theory and practice

Foundation training in Buddhist theory and practice

This is an integrated one-year programme for people interested in Buddhist wisdom, and developing a spiritual practice for the modern world. We will journey through a process of meditational grounding, deepening into an awareness of the nature of mind, and  finally finding a way of  re-emerging into fuller connection with ourselves, one another and the world.

The course is designed around Buddhist and Western insight, philosophical understanding, and open experiential inquiry. Through meditation and group work, the course helps us develops deeper connection with ourselves and one another. We explore personal and collective philosophic, societal and psychological issues. The effect of the process equips course members to develop their own internal critique and an ability to look at the world around us afresh, with clarity and compassion. We learn how to look more profoundly into the conditions that surround us. This helps us live our lives creatively, awakening to the potential of our human existence and making choices that contribute to our own health and those of others.

Training outline

The training will run over three 4-day intensive retreat conditions over a period of one year, and participants will be encouraged to set up and maintain a meditation practice over this period, keeping a meditation and practice diary, and communicating on a monthly basis with one of the teachers. The programme is run by highly experienced dharma, meditation and  Buddhist psychotherapeutic practitioners and teachers,  and is radical in its interpretation of the dharma for life in the West.

At the end of the course participants will have:

- experiential introduction to embodied communication and the energetic field

- an understanding of core Buddhist concepts and their interrelationships as derived from fundamental texts

- understandings of the relationship between modern psychotherapy and Buddhist psychology

- introduction to the evolution of Western thought and its relationship to Buddhist notions of reality
