This is a six-month introductory foundation to contemplative psychotherapy. Through body/mind awareness practices we learn to journey individually and collectively through the many layers that obscure our innermost being. At the heart of this work is a belief in the intrinsic health, beauty and inter-connectedness of all beings. In the West there are unprecedented numbers of people presenting themselves as depressed, addicted, or over-anxious. Our understanding is that this is a social, existential and spiritual crisis as much as a medical crisis. In such conditions traditional medical models of psychology do not always work, indeed, they may often contribute to the crisis. Contemplative psychotherapy draws on Buddhist methods of awareness to help heal by finding ways of exploring and opening ourselves to the deeper sense of being human. It offers an invitation to slow down and bring awareness to that which is lost through the frenetic nature of our everyday lives.
We learn to contact archetypal, energetic and ancestral energies and work together at uncovering those patterns of behaviour which hold us back from full connection with ourselves and our universe. Our intent in the psychotherapy situation and in group work is to surface these fundamental organising patterns without judgement and allow compassionate awareness to transform these blocked energies. By listening deeply to the calls from our ancestors, our families, our societies, the world, we see how we are all conditioned and driven by these patterns, and how these obscure our inherent health – the radiant core of our being.
Working individually through meditative practices, and collectively through ritual and group work, we can penetrate more deeply into the nature of how we are.
At the end of the training participants will be able to:
• set up their own Kum Nye meditational practice
• understand fundamental principles of Buddhist psychology and philosophy
• bring awareness to their own organising patterns and views and discover what holds them back from relationship
• understand some fundamental principles of Western psychology
• find ways of using these methods in their own work practices or lives
Training outline and schedule:
The course draws upon the principles of core process psychotherapy as taught in the Karuna Institute in Devon, Kum Nye Tibetan yoga practices and Western psychology, It will be largely experiential, though we will be exploring and drawing upon theoretical concepts throughout. It will consist of meditation, Kum Nye Tibetan yoga, communication exercises, group work, talks, and rituals. A reading list is provided, but this is not compulsory. It is expected that participants will want to develop or build up a spiritual practice throughout the time of the course, and this will be shared as an integral part of the weekends.
